Privacy policy

Last updated October 1, 2026. This policy explains what personal information The Northline collects, why, and the choices you have.

1. Who we are

The Northline (northlinenews.com) is published by Northline Media LLC (“we”, “us”), 72 Harrison Ave, New York, NY 10121, United States. We are responsible for the personal information described in this policy. You can reach our privacy contact at privacy@northlinenews.com or by mail at the address above, marked “Attention: Privacy”.

2. Scope

This policy applies to our website, our newsletters and any correspondence with us. It does not apply to websites we link to, including the news organizations and public bodies cited in our Sources boxes, which have their own policies.

3. Information you give us

  • Newsletter sign-ups: your email address, the newsletters you choose and, optionally, your province or state.
  • Contact, tip and correction messages: your name, email address, the content of your message and any files you attach. You may send a tip without giving your name.
  • Advertising enquiries: business contact details.

Forms on this site open a pre-filled message in your own email program. Nothing you type is sent to us until you send that email.

4. Information collected automatically

  • Technical data: IP address (shortened before storage), browser type, device type, operating system, language and referring page.
  • Usage data: pages viewed, time on page and scroll depth, collected as aggregate statistics.
  • Preferences stored on your device, such as your cookie choices and article text size.

We collect analytics and advertising data only after you consent, where consent is required, as described in our Cookie policy. We honour the Global Privacy Control signal sent by your browser.

6. Journalism and sources

Information gathered for journalism is handled under our Editorial standards. We protect confidential sources and do not disclose information that could identify a source who has been promised confidentiality, except where a court compels us and all legal avenues have been exhausted.

7. Sharing

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share it only with:

  • service providers who host the site, deliver email and provide analytics, under contracts that limit their use of the data to providing services to us;
  • advertising partners, only if you have allowed advertising cookies; under some US state laws this may be considered “sharing” for targeted advertising, which you can refuse on our Your privacy choices page;
  • authorities, when required by law and after we have reviewed the request;
  • a buyer or successor if the business is sold, in which case this policy continues to apply.

8. International transfers

We are based in the United States and our main providers store data in the United States and Canada. When we receive personal information from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we rely on the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework where our provider is certified, or on Standard Contractual Clauses. Canadian readers' information may be processed in the United States and may be accessible to authorities there under US law.

9. How long we keep it

  • Newsletter data: until you unsubscribe, then deleted within 30 days.
  • Messages and correction requests: 24 months, or longer when connected to a published correction.
  • Tips: as long as needed for reporting, then deleted unless needed to protect a source or meet a legal obligation.
  • Server logs: 30 days. Analytics data: 14 months, in aggregate form.

10. Security

The site is served over HTTPS only. Access to reader data is limited to staff who need it and protected by multi-factor authentication. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we will notify you and the relevant regulators as the law requires.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what we hold about you, to receive a copy, to correct it, to delete it, to object to or restrict its use, to withdraw consent at any time and to opt out of targeted advertising.

  • Canada: under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) you may access and correct your information and complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca). Residents of Quebec also have rights under Law 25.
  • United States: residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Oregon, Texas, New Jersey and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have the rights those laws provide, including the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising. California residents may use an authorized agent. If we decline a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision; if the appeal is denied, you may contact your state attorney general.
  • EEA, UK and Switzerland: you may complain to your local data protection authority.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.

12. How to make a request

Email privacy@northlinenews.com, call +1 (646) 374-5434 or write to the address above. We will confirm receipt within 10 days and respond within 30 days (45 days under some US state laws, extendable once where permitted). We may ask for information to verify your identity, and we will use it only for that purpose.

13. Children

The Northline is a general news site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.

14. Changes

We will post any change to this policy on this page with a new date. If a change is significant, we will also tell newsletter subscribers by email before it takes effect.
