Cookie policy
Last updated October 1, 2026. How The Northline uses cookies and similar technologies, and how to control them.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. Similar technologies include local storage, which keeps small pieces of data on your device. We refer to all of them as cookies.
The cookies we use
| Name | Category | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| nl_consent | Strictly necessary | Remembers your cookie choices | 12 months |
| nl_textsize | Preferences | Remembers the article text size you chose | 12 months |
| nl_analytics | Analytics (optional) | Counts page views and reading depth in aggregate | 14 months |
| nl_ads | Advertising (optional) | Lets advertising partners measure and limit ad frequency | 13 months |
Strictly necessary cookies are always on because the site cannot remember your choices without them. Analytics and advertising cookies are off until you switch them on.
Your choices
When you first visit, a banner lets you accept all cookies, reject optional cookies or choose by category. You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a refusal of advertising cookies.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies means we will ask for your choices on every visit.
Third parties
Pages may link to other websites, which may set their own cookies once you visit them. Our Share buttons are plain links: they do not load scripts from social networks and do not set cookies until you click them.
Legal basis
Where the GDPR, the ePrivacy rules or Quebec's Law 25 apply, we rely on your consent for optional cookies and on our legitimate interest for strictly necessary ones. Under US state privacy laws, advertising cookies may count as “sharing” for targeted advertising, which you can refuse on the Your privacy choices page.
