About The Northline

We report on Canada for the millions of people who live with one foot on each side of the 49th parallel.

Why we exist

Roughly 800,000 Canadians live in the United States, and tens of millions of Americans cross the border every year for work, family, hockey and holidays. Most of them follow Canada through fragments: a hockey score, a festival photo, a first-snow video shared by a cousin in Winnipeg. The Northline was started in 2023 to give that audience a single, steady place to read what is happening in Canada, written in plain English and with the context a reader outside the country needs.

We are a small digital newsroom. We do not try to match the size of Canada's national broadcasters and papers, and we link to them often. Our job is to choose the stories that matter to people with ties to both countries, explain them carefully and say clearly where our information comes from.

What we cover

  • Canada: communities, traditions and everyday life in the provinces and territories.
  • Sports: the seven Canadian NHL clubs, the CFL, the Blue Jays, figure skating, skiing and amateur sport.
  • Science and nature: space, research, wildlife and the outdoors.
  • Arts and culture: music, books, film, festivals and the artists behind them.
  • Life and travel: seasonal events, fairs, ski hills, food and trips worth planning.

We deliberately leave out party politics, markets and crime: other Canadian newsrooms cover them in depth, and our readers come to us for the rest of Canadian life. We do not publish opinion columns, endorsements or sponsored news. Every article on this site is reporting.

How we work

Our reporters work from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver, and our editors from New York. Much of our daily report is built on primary sources — league records and game reports, space agency briefings, festival and event organizers, researchers in the field — and on the reporting of Canadian outlets, which we credit by name and link in a Sources box at the end of every article. Where we rely on another outlet's reporting, the article says so in the text.

Every article is read by an editor before publication. Our full rules are in our Editorial standards, and mistakes are corrected openly under our Corrections policy.

Who owns us and how we are funded

The Northline is published by Northline Media LLC, a privately held company registered in the State of New York. It has no owner with interests in Canadian politics, energy or sport, and it receives no government funding in Canada or the United States.

We are funded by advertising. Advertisers have no say in what we cover or how. Ads are always labelled and are kept visually separate from journalism, as explained in our Advertising policy.
