How we use AI
A plain account of where artificial intelligence is used at The Northline, and where it is not.
Where we use it
- Lead illustrations. Article images are generated by an AI image model from a brief written by an editor, then checked for accuracy and taste before publication. They are captioned “Illustration generated with AI” and never depict real, identifiable people.
- Transcription. Reporters may use automated transcription for recorded interviews. Every quotation is checked against the recording before publication.
- Search on this site, which runs entirely in your browser and does not use AI.
Where we do not use it
Our articles, headlines, summaries and quotations are written and edited by people. We do not publish AI-generated text as journalism, we do not create synthetic sources, and we do not alter documentary images.
Our data and AI training
We do not permit our articles to be collected for training AI models without a licence. Our robots.txt file and Terms of use reflect that position.
